You will need:
* Pasting table (this can be any large table – cover it first with something waterproof)
* Bucket and paste brush
* Scissors
* Scalpel
* Seam-roller
* Paper-hanging brush
* Plumb-line or spirit-level
* Steel tape measure
* Pencil
* Large steel ruler
1. Estimate the amount of paper you’ll need – the average roll is 10.05m long and 530mm wide. Measure the room including windows and doors to allow for wastage. If you’re using a large, repeat pattern, allow a little more again. Manufacturers should have guidelines for your print.
2. Clear the room. If you’re painting the ceiling, doors, windows and skirting boards, do it before.
3. Prepare your walls – ensure they’re stripped of old wallpaper and flaky paint before washing with sugar soap. Prime newly plastered walls with a coat of ’size’ (a watered down, glue–like sealant) to ensure the wallpaper adhesive sticks well.
4. You may want to line your walls at this stage to cover imperfections and bumps. Hang lining-paper horizontally to avoid overlapping seams.
5. Choose the appropriate paste for your wallpaper and mix according to packet instructions.
6. Taking your wallpaper, check which way the pattern goes and decide where you want definite motifs to be.
7. Measure from the top of the skirting board to the ceiling and cut wallpaper to size, allowing an extra 100mm for trimming. Cut several sheets at this stage – laying them on top of each other on the pasting table. Apply paste along the centre of the wallpaper and work to the edges in a herringbone pattern.
8. For the first hanging, it’s easiest to start near a corner. Using the plumb-line, draw a floor to ceiling pencil-line that is about 25mm less than the width of the paper to the corner.
9. Position the first pasted length of paper at the top of the wall (allow 50mm overlap) with its edge following the pencil line. Then smooth it down away from the line and into the corner so that it just overlaps onto the next wall.
10. Crease the top and bottom of the paper against the ceiling and skirting board junctions then pull gently away from the wall and cut along the creases.
11. Place the next length of pasted paper against the edge of the first, matching patterns at eye-level. When you have several lengths in place, run the seam-roller down the joins.
12. Measure door and window frames and cut corresponding holes in wallpaper, allowing 30mm overlap. Hang paper in the usual way, pushing it into the frame surround with the brush.
13. At the frame corner, make small diagonal cuts in the paper towards the edge of the frame, snipping and repositioning until you’ve cut away the right amount. Use a scalpel to cut paper to fit against the flat edge of the frame.
14. On a stairwell, work from a safe platform and hang the longest sheet of paper first (remember the skirting board will be at an angle). Hang from the top and allow the length to drop – if you have someone helping you, they can fix the lower half in place.
15. Step back and admire your handy work.
