Woodworking Library Plans

Do it yourself is a marvelous way to get things you want. Using your hands you create the items you want and save a lot of money. The savings are commonly huge and DIY may also be the only means of getting exactly what you need. Just about anything can be made from DIY plans  which are available on the internet presently. The price ranges from absolutely free to somewhat expensive. Very often a website which gives away free plans will also have  a lot of other plans for sale, or it may simply depend on advertising for payment. Many free plans are not recent in origin and may not be best quality. You will though find exceptions to this rule. You could check this by carrying out an internet search for the item you need.

Do it yourself plans are to be found in periodicals such as crafts, woodworking and mechanical magazines.  Current periodicals will have plans which are new and up to date. The plan you are seeking will not likely be found rightaway. Any plan you want is likely to be found in back issues after a search. Old magazines can be difficult to find which raises a problem here. Your local public library is a good place to look, particularly in larger cities, since many libraries keep bound volumes of old magazines. It is quite possible that you will find bound magazines from the nineteen fifties and,in some cases, even earlier periods. Old magazines such as these are a very good source for finding old plans.These old magazines dated  prior to 1964 are mostly copyright expired and have entered the public domain.

Public domain materials can be republished and used for any purpose by the public. Earlier than the year 1964 US copyrights were extended for a 28 year term only. This copyright had to be renewed during the course of the 28th year or it ended and the publication became public domain material.  After the 28th year the copyright could not be reinstated. Consequently any material which is in the public domain cannot be copyrighted by it’s original author,publisher or in fact anyone.Such material was only published once as a rule so the magazine did not renew the copyright and the plans entered the public domain. Those magazines which were published before 1964 are almost without exception in the public domain and the content can be utilised by anyone for any purpose.

A few of these types of magazine are Science and Mechanics,Mechanix IIlustrated, Popular Science, and Science and Mechanics to name several.  Plans from these magazines are commonly available on the web either for sale or free for this reason. The person searching for a particular plan will encounter a big problem in locating the old magazine which carries a suitable plan..  This may not be simple to do and it is usually easier to spend a few dollars for the plan than to use a great deal of valuable time looking for a free copy.
