Different types of finishing projects include varnish, shellac, lacquer or polyurethane. In addition to that, you might also need putty, wood filler, polish or wax. There are so many products available on the market, that it might be difficult or rather confusing to choose the right product.

To stain a wood, means to add color to the wood without covering up the grain – the core difference between staining and painting a woodworking project. Pigmented stains are made when a pigment is combined with a liquid. A pigment is a dry powder, containing the color. This is mixed with a liquid, which includes a binder, which helps the pigment stick to the wood surface. The binder works with a carrier so that the pigment does not dissolve the binder, but are suspended in the liquid. Today we are fortunate to have an array of colors to choose from if we decide to stain a project. Many years ago, available colors included only yellow, red or burned charcoal, because it was made from different types of crushed rock and clay.  

A dye stain is a type of stain that allows the wood grain to show through the stain. The main difference between a pigment stain and a dye stain is that dye stains dissolve in the carrier instead of being suspended in it. Therefore, it can easily penetrate the wood surface, for a totally different look than that of a pigment stain.

To achieve a more even stain color, a gel or water-based stain can be used instead. These stains only penetrate the wood slightly, to minimize uneven coloring or blotches. To make sure if you have the right stain and color for your project, apply the stain to a piece of scrap wood to examine the result. Softer woods like cherry, pine or birch, are more difficult to stain evenly, and a gel stain or water-based stain should be used instead.

Expert recommends polished and honed finishes for areas that are high traffic and are expected to dirt because the smooth surfaces are easier to clean. However, the maintenance of the textured surfaces is not easy, but still they often worth it because of the look they bring.

Before going to purchase travertine tiles you should know they can be sealed if you would like to give the area some more protection. However, the minerals in natural stone can react to things with acidity such as citrus, alcohol and vinegar causing the stone to stain.

Sealing the tiles before grouting will help you to wipe the grout off the tiles. Avoid to the usage of abrasives. You can go with stone soaps that are recommended for cleaning the tiles. Abrasives cleaners should also be avoided. There are stone soaps available that are recommended for cleaning the tiles. If you spill something acidic on the surface you should try to clean it as soon as possible to avoid permanent damage.

The hiring of a professional depends on how much experience you have for installing the tiles. If you have some experience then you can go with the do-it-yourself service, but if you are not experienced your mistakes could cost you.
