When you are installing crown molding it is essential to have a step-by-step guide that you can follow to make sure that the installation process runs smoothly. Remember the most successful installation process is one where all active participants understand the entire process from beginning to end.
Easy as 1: Planning
Whenever you are undergoing a home improvement project make sure you properly plan for the occasion. Crown molding installation can be very overwhelming and time consuming if you do not do the proper planning. First you need to determine your layout. How big is your room where the mouldings will be installed? Measuring your room will allow you to determine the linear footage of the crown molding needed. Make sure that you buy a little more crown molding than desired in order to accommodate for waste/mistakes. Adding roughly 10% to the entire length of the crown molding should be enough. Once you have purchased the crown molding is important to store the molding in a dry and well-ventilated room inside. Before you install the crown molding, place the molding in the room where it will be installed roughly 72 hours before hand. This will give the molding time to adjusted to the room temperature. Also, if you plan to paint your crown molding do so before the installation.
There are some essential tools you will need to be able to pull off a superior installation project. These tools include: clean cloth (cleaning/preparing walls and molding for install), caulking gun (adhering molding to wall/ceiling), miter box/saw (creating quality cuts for molding), chalk/pencil (mark walls for molding installation), hammer/finishing nails (extra support for crown molding).
Easy as 1-2: Installation
During the installation process make sure that you follow good construction habits and observe all safety precautions.
Mark your wall with a chalk line identifying where the bottom edge of the molding will meet the wall. Always start your molding installation behind a door so that the molding joints are less visible.
Whenever you start the installation process make sure to measure your walls for a second time. This will allow you to verify the wall length and cut the molding accordingly. When your crown molding meets the wall you will have to use a miter saw. Remember that while using a miter saw the ceiling edge of the molding lies against the bottom of the box or saw and the wall edge of the molding lies against the site opposite of your. Make sure that after you cut the molding you place the two pieces of molding together to assure proper fit, before you affix the molding to the wall.
After you have cut your molding now it is time to adhere the molding to the wall. Add construction adhesive from your caulking gun to the top and bottom backside of the molding. Push the molding against the wall and add extract security by using finishing nails. Smooth away any adhesive that may have come from behind the wall. Touch-up the holes made by the finishing nails will paint.
Easy as 1-2-3: Admiring
After you have installed all the crown molding take a look around the room and touch-up any remaining spots and then sit back and admire your work. Molding installation is a tedious process, but one that makes you truly feel accomplished.
