Need some help/advice!?
I have this desk that I got for free (found it on the side of the road)and am hoping to refurbish it and use it as my sewing desk. While it has good bones to it, it really needs some TLC. The woodworking part is taken care of because my Dad isn’t necessarily a carpenter but can build just about anything. My question is, The hardware is still in pretty good shape but needs cleaned up. I was wondering if anyone knows how to go about cleaning it without damaging the floral motif on it. Also, once it is cleaned would it be able to be spray painted. It is brass (I think) and has some petina (sp?) on it. Could the petina(sp?) be removed with light sand papering or what?

recommend NOT trying to clean drawer pulls if you want to maintain any value as collectible, desk appears to be circa 50’s hardware is most likely brass plated and you may remove plating with harsh cleaning . if you insist removing patina use metal polish like “Brasso” but use light touch .When you remove hardware , scratch the back side to see if they are plated or solid brass then you’ll know if you can safely buffout the pieces..

When choosing your new computer desk, there are many things to consider other than just price. There is space, style, shape, and accessories. Many people who have little space to set up their computer work station opt for the corner computer desk. There are quite a few different styles of these to choose from.
With choices in ‘L’ shaped desks, ‘U’ shaped desks, traditional straight desks, wood construction and metal and glass construction you may feel like you’re going crazy. Don’t worry the extra attention to detail in this process will be especially rewarding when your computer work station is set up and functional.
Of all the accessories that may or may not come with your computer desk, a filing cabinet is one that is very useful. Some people may even choose to buy the filing cabinet separate, and this is something to consider when pricing computer desks. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a huge four drawer one, a two drawer one can be just as functional, and a lot more space friendly.
When it comes to items such as your calendar, pictures, knick knacks and even your work light, visibility is a key element. Shelves can provide a very functional option for keeping these items in view, yet off your desk. Whether part of your computer desk, or purchased separately they really do pay off. Your pens and paperclips and other items such as these which generally find their way to your work area are just one reason that drawers can be an excellent accessory.
Wireless components are an excellent choice for a clutter free work area. The keyboard and mouse especially can help to keep your work area neat and efficient by eliminating wires running across your desk. As wireless components increase in popularity your choices for wireless components will increase also.
A computer desk and accessories with rounded corners is an excellent choice for those with young children in the home. Creating an efficient work space needs to be complimented with child friendliness. This is especially important to keep in mind when choosing your accessories.
Locking drawers are a necessity when considering child friendliness. Let’s face it our young children are inquisitive, young thrill seekers. While they may remember when asked, when faced with the temptation of things on the desk, they will undoubtedly forget that this area is ‘off limits’.
Especially in homes with young children, it is an excellent idea to stay away from the traditional swivel chairs. Especially the ones with casters, these are just a disaster waiting to happen. A more functional choice in this situation is a solid chair. Consider how easy it is to tip, and comfort as well. With the huge selection of chairs of this type out there, finding one that is comfortable for you, and less enticing for your children should be relatively easy. Cabinets and drawers are especially effective in creating a child friendly work space, by keeping things out of sight, and thus out of mind. Small children are especially stimulated by things they can see.
