Tips For Learning Woodworking

Do you hesitate when you think about the prospect of learning woodworking?  There is no need for that.  After many years of woodworking, and helping others to learn, I have begun to recognize why many people feel this way about woodworking.  They approach it with the wrong mindset; a mindset of terror and fear.  If you begin by getting in the right frame of mind, all you need then is action, persistence, and a little imagination.

The first thing you need to do is to take action.  Jump in with both feet.  You can read all sorts of instructional manuals and buy all sorts of tools, but until you make that first cut, learning has not begun.  I suggest you start out small.  I mean a beginning is a beginning.  Perhaps you could start out with a small project, such as a birdhouse.  My first action in woodworking was taken many years ago, in my dad’s shop.  It was right then and there, that I began learning.

Persistence is the next thing you must have in order to learn woodworking.  Sometimes there will be a lot of trial and error involved.  Every now and then I have to make a mistake in order to get it right the next time.  If you make an error, don’t give up.  Step back, make a mental note and begin again.  Sometimes I do a test run on scrap material to make sure that I have the cuts right before I begin.

When learning woodworking, imagination is something that you can never have enough of.  I like to think of woodworking as a form of art.  Even though I regularly use plans, I like to add my own personal touch to it.  I guess you could compare that to making a drink and deciding to add a splash of lime.

Following safety precautions and using safety equipment is something you should always do when woodworking.  A very important tip I give to someone new: don’t be scared of the tools.  I do believe that a person can be too careful.  Make sure you use safety goggles, and learn to become one with your tools.  Learning woodworking will then begin to be a much more rewarding experience.

So now that you have a mindset to start woodworking, take your first action.  As you do, you can repeat the actions and you will become better as you go.  Remember to use that head of yours; I’m sure there are lots of great woodworking ideas up there.  There is no such thing as right or wrong when learning woodworking; it’s what you make of it.
