Woodworking Bed Plans

My wife is a bit fussy about keeping our house neat and tidy, and any transgressing of this can make her a bit grumpy. When I mentioned to her about bringing home the dog we had spoken about, as a birthday gift for our daughter, she was quite emphatic in her desire for the animal to be housed outdoors in its own doghouse.

So to avoid ending up in the doghouse myself, I agreed to take care of providing the doghouse for our new pet. All things considered, I thought about trying to put one of these together myself. After all, there is not much to them, so I thought. A doghouse basically looks like a large box with a roof on top. That is a bit simple I know, but it sums up the design as I see it.

I found I could easily sketch out a design of the doghouse I wanted, but then I was not sure of the type of wood I should be using. So after thinking about that, I decided to look at those doghouse plans which come with the materials needed, including the correct wood for the job.

The wood is pre cut and the holes drilled as well, so all you need to do is assemble it together, using basic woodworking tools, such as a screwdriver and hammer. This option appealed to me most, because it meant I could put the doghouse together over one weekend, or two at the most, and have the job completed.

When choosing doghouse plans, be sure to select the one which is right for your dog’s size, and allow for some growth if she is very young. It needs to be big enough for her to turn around, but not too big that it will be too cold for her in the harsher weather. This is important for your dog’s welfare. You will also need to customize it for your dog, with the appropriate bedding and decoration, etc. A set of doghouse plans has saved me time and money, and I now have the doghouse we needed.

Free, simple, woodworking plans that you can just download off the internet sounds like a great deal. But unfortunately many websites that offer these “free” resources are about as reputable as most “free” ringtone/mp3 offers. It never turns out to be as advertised. “IT’S 100% FREE!!!……..after COMPLETING THIS OFFER/SUBSCRIBING TO THIS SERVICE/SELLING YOUR FIRSTBORN ON E-BAY TO DERANGED, CHAIN GANG, GRAPE-STOMPING MONKS” (no, I don’t have any idea how these monks would have e-bay but something tells me they aren’t that reputable if their getting income from a “free ringtone/mp3″ site anyways). This of course doesn’t mean that there aren’t actual free plans on the internet to use but you definitely get what you pay for. Here are the major problems I’ve found.

1) The “free simple woodworking plans” turn out to be simple only if we’re using some bizarre definition which means that there are no instructions whatsoever on how to put the darn thing together. Granted, you can easily say that every blueprint boils down to “cut the wood up and nail ‘em together” but for most beginners, we like to have just a little bit more instruction than that, especially if we want it to look professional and not like a failed junior high woodshop project that someone put two grooves in and called it an ashtray just to save face.

2) They are the most “simple woodworking plans” on the planet…..if you’re Bob Villa. I kid you not, someone had the gall to claim that a friggin’ VICTORIAN ARMOIRE was simple. To a beginner, this is like trying to teach a kindergartner the finer points of quantum physics…..in 14th century latin….and the child is deaf. To their credit, they had detailed measurements of every conceivable angle but so help them if they tell anyone what their supposed to do after they calculate the materials needed to make VICTORIAN ARMOIRE! Many times the author’s don’t qualify what they mean when they use the term “simple”.

3) The “free plans” are really just a free list of plans that you actually have to pay money for. Again this is the old bait and switch technique used by most scam sites. If you find you’re getting re-routed to something other than an html based plan with the pictures on obvious display or to a.pdf document, chances are you’ll more than likely have to pay for the plans.

Now don’t misunderstand, there is nothing wrong with anyone charging for plans and most plans that you buy are well-written and skill appropriate. But be wary of anyone promising good quality work without actually charging anything for it. Expertly written blueprints will save you plenty of headache and the carpenters who did the research and work deserve to be compensated. A small investment into a collection of professionally written plans is well worth your time and is an invaluable resource in helping you get the foundation you need for all your DIY projects.

I spent quite a bit of time beating my head against the proverbial wall with free plans off the internet and the headache was not worth the trouble…especially after having to fix the hole I made in the wall with my head.
