A tool box that has all the right tools, and that you can get out and use easily, will make your life as a homeowner (or even a renter) infinitely easier. Gather all of the common tools you need for just about every job, invest in a sturdy tool box, and keep it in an easy to reach place, and each time you have a small problem like a picture falling down, you will not be tempted to put it off since everything will be ready for you.
After a while, you may feel you need extra features and space, and a real toolbox will give those to you.
If you are just starting out in acquiring your tools, a small tackle box may serve the purpose of a tool box, as long as it is sturdy and big enough to hold the basic tools. There are even tools boxes that have molded spaces to fit the various tools perfectly.
So what tools do you want in your toolbox? Here is what you should have, at a minimum.
- A home repair manual. This is not a tool, but you will use it often when you come across problems, so keep it right in your tool box for reference.
- A hammer. No one can do without a hammer for the most basic repairs such as if piece of trim is loose. A claw hammer has a claw that can remove nails. There are a lot of other kinds of hammers, such as framing hammer, balpeen hammer, a mallet or a sledge hammer. You will learn from experience if you need any of these.
- Screwdriver. You tighten or loosen screws with a screwdriver. It is a simple enough tool with a handle, shaft and head. The two basic kinds you should have are a slotted and a Phillips. A few of these in different sizes should handle most jobs. Again, as you learn more, you may want to have a crosspoint or a hex screwdriver as well.
- Pliers. Pliers enable you to grab things firmly. But there are also pliers that do more than grip, such as cutting pliers or crimping pliers for electrical work. But even gripping pliers come in different types such as flat nose, round nose and needle nose.
- Tape measure. You don’t even want to start a job if you can’t measure it. You can get a tape measure that is metallic ribbon in a retracting case, but even if you just start out with a cloth tap measure that you roll up, you will need at least 25 foot length in your toolbox.
- A saw. There are different types of saws depending on the material to be cut. A saw is simply a serrated blade with a handle and you can have a hand saw, which may be enough for a basic tool set, or a powered saw. A frame saw may be needed for larger jobs.
- Putty knife. This is used for scraping and applying putty, but it has other uses as well. The flexible blade can be squeezed under many surfaces to help in removal.
- Wrench. You will add leverage when you are turning nuts and bolts if you use a wrench. The open end wrench is the basic kind that you can lock to a certain size to grasp the nut or bolt. Other types are box end, crescent, socket and allen wrench.
- Awl. Primarily used in woodworking, it starts a hole before you start drilling, or you can draw a line with an awl to use as a guide for your saw.

For leather work, consider the basics: an awl and spare point, a retractable X-acto knife
and spare blades, a retractable knife with a break-off blade and a rotary punch. In
addition, youÂ’ll need needles, a lump of beeswax and some waxed linen thread.
As well, a pair of pliers to pull the needle through the leather is a must, and scissors you
can use for cutting the leather. Then there are edge slickers and bevellers that are used to
finish the edges, drive punches for bigger holes and thong cutters for making laces. A
T-square, compass and yardstick are essential to ensure that your leather work is
measured accurately.
If youÂ’re just starting out with leather work, you might not want to spend a lot of money
on tools. Once youÂ’ve worked with the basic set and completed a few projects, youÂ’ll
have a better idea of what tools work best and what you use most. At that point, a little
research and some comparative shopping can lead you to acquiring some better quality
tools that will enhance your leather work.
Of course, even the most expensive tools wonÂ’t help if you havenÂ’t taken the time to
develop and perfect your craft. If you do your very best with what you have, it doesnÂ’t
matter if you canÂ’t afford the most expensive awl or the latest knife.
Quality will show
anyway.
Tips and Tricks:
* Start with a basic tool set.
* Buy better quality tools once youÂ’ve completed some
projects and have a better idea of what will enhance the quality of your leather work.
* Study the various types of leather before starting.
Tooling Leather
There are many different types of leather available, some better than others, depending
upon the project you have in mind. Vegetable-tanned leather, also called tooling leather,
has been processed using vegetable dyes rather than chemicals. ItÂ’s usually flesh-colored
and is excellent for a variety of projects, especially if the top is to be stamped or tooled.
Because it has a relatively rigid structure, this type of leather is ideal for leather work items
like book covers and belts.
Latigo
Oil-tanned leather, also called latigo, unlike other leathers, has a waxy surface and is ideal
for leather work projects where durability and flexibility are a must, such as for tack and
saddles. Avoid using it though if you donÂ’t want the finished product to have stretch and
flexibility, such as in dog collars. Bear in mind also that it canÂ’t be tooled or stamped.
Top Grain Leather
Top grain leather has one smooth side, called grain, which is the skin side, and a rough
inner side, the flesh side. Either side can be used, rough or smooth.
Chrome-Tanned Leather
Chrome-tanned leather is dyed with modern chemicals such as chromium and comes in a
variety of colors, is often white on one side, though the cut edges can be a different color
than the facing. ItÂ’s relatively inexpensive, but not very breathable, and canÂ’t be tooled or
stamped because itÂ’s too soft for leather work and it’s waterproof
Weight of Leather
Leather thickness is given in ounces. The heavier the weight, the thicker the leather is.
Calf or goat skin is generally 2 ounces or 1/32 inch thick. One ounce is 1/64th of an inch
thick. On the other end of the scale, 8 ounce leather is usually 1/8 inch thick.
Summary:
* Tooling leather is the best choice for most leather work projects.
* Latigo leather is great for durables like tack and saddles.
* Choose suede and garment leather when making clothing.
* The heavier the weight of leather, the thicker it is.
* When ordering leather through the mail, try some sample swatches first.
* Keep your leather soft and supple with the proper oil.
