The art of floristry is the art that embodies the business pertaining to selling flowers. Other than just selling the flower, floristry pertains to the art used to make floral arrangements and other popular floral designs. In fact, this element of floristry is so important that floral design schools have also been set up to provide lessons and knowledge one how floristry works.
With the ever-growing interest in the natural world and flowers, the floral industry continues to grow. The need for good schools or academies to provide training in floristry and floral design has also increased. Many institutes have risen to meet the demand and provide quality education and training in floral design.
In the art of floral design, there are currently three kinds of design types that florists follow. The most widely used is the high style floral design. According to different philippine florists, this particular floral design is usually the one employed by many florists for it doesn’t require too much discipline to achieve. The designs are contemporary and linear that usually highlights unique forms of both individual floral materials and of the designs themselves. Unlike the English Garden floral design, which is another popular floral design, High Style floral designs feature negative space and incorporate asymmetric placement of materials.
The English Garden is one of the oldest forms of floral designs practiced around the world. From the name itself, the English Garden is traditionally an English form of floral design. Unlike the High Style, English Garden would usually employ asymmetric placement of materials. Stems are placed in a radial fashion and feature abundant use of seasonal flowers and foliages.
Another type of floral design that employs the same discipline such as that of English Garden is the Ikebana. According to several philippine florists, the ikebana is a traditional floral design popularly practiced in Japan. But unlike the English Garden, more particularly with the High Style, ikebana is more on the spiritual aspect of the floral design.
The spiritual aspect of Ikebana is considered very important to its practitioners. Silence is a must during practices of Ikebana. It is a time to appreciate things in nature that people often overlook because of their busy lives. Ikebana can inspire to identify with beauty in all art forms. This is also the time when one feels closeness to nature which provides relaxation for the mind, body, and soul. Unlike the other popular floral designs, according to philippine florists, ikebana is primarily practiced for personal enjoyment.
