When dealing in your everyday life or only from time to time with potentially dangerous elements like cables or anything close to something with high voltage, it is extremely important to wear arc flash clothing and all the arc flash protection necessary to work as safely as possible.
For those who have never heard of arc flash protection, it is important to define arc flash.
An arc flash is a kind of electrical blast that can result in serious injury and even death. So to make sure they do not get injured if something like that happens, people working around high voltage equipment or anything electric like in the cable installation industry need to wear arc flash clothing to make sure nothing happens to them.
Arc flash clothing for example is designed to provide a screen from heat and flame coming from an electrical blast or simply from electricity, thus reducing injury risk like being totally burnt. It also gives the person wearing this kind of arc flash protection a few additional seconds of protection to help him or her run away from the dangerous area. Arc Flash clothing can greatly improve the likelihood of survival and reduce the need for medical treatment like skin grafts or anything else.
It is important though that there is a huge difference between the clothing worn by a firefighter and arc flash clothing which are two completely different kind of equipment for very different situations.
People may not really realize the importance of wearing specially made clothing. Normal clothing like synthetic or cotton shirts will usually help develop a fire and unfortunately may also melt on the skin, causing even greater injuries.
A good example of arc flash PPE is the protection hood with ear protection that will protect all the head. One very good advantage of that kind of protective hood is that it has a protective apron where the face is to reduce significantly the heat or toxic materials the person wearing this might breathe in case of an arc flash since in most cases, the most natural reaction to a shock or fright would be to inhale.
Even if arc flash protection clothing like arc flash PPE or protection hoods can look a bit big and uncomfortable at first, it is vital for your safety to wear this type of clothing to protect yourself when working in a hazardous area where you could be potentially exposed to an arc flash or contact with a high voltage electric cable.
