Whether you are using a glorified type writer, an HTPC or a $7500 gaming computer, you will always have a problem with dust. A number of high-end cases have built-in dust filters and some cheaper cases have started to copy this trend, but there is usually never enough protection against the dreaded dust problem. For enthusiasts, the act of cleaning a computer once a month is habit.
Dust filters get washed and a can of air is usually taken to the innards to remove any lingering dust that found its way in, but for those people who either don’t have the time or are not tech-savvy this is not an option.
As the old saying goes ‘prevention is better than cure’ and for computers this couldn’t be truer. Dust build-up can cause many problems but the main one is heat. The accumulation of dust can impede airflow, which in turn causes temperatures to increase. For those who have taken apart an old P2 system the sight of so much dust everywhere is enough to make you cry. It covers everything from GPU to motherboard and even hard drives, but the worst places are the heat sinks and fans.
DEMCiflex computer air filters are a rather interesting concept. They use a weak magnetic strip (so it won’t cause any problems with your system but it is strong enough to stick to your case) to attach a dust filter over external openings. DEMCiflex filters also come with a self-adhesive magnetic strip for areas of your chassis that have a non-magnetic surface.
The frame of the filter comes in different colors and branded with different logos, so fan boys can go crazy. The filters come in different sizes including the most commonly needed sizes 80mm and 120mm, but there is also one big enough for 140mm fans although its effective size is only 129mm.
The material used is medical grade high precision mesh that lets air through but not dust. In fact the weave is so tight that not even a hypodermic needle would be able to get through without breaking it. A few decent air filters to protect your expensive computer are a good idea.
