The Spring Festival is the most important and traditional festival for Chinese, because it starts from the beginning of Spring. People will hold this festival at the last day of every year which is called New Years Eve. People will keep vigil, and all the members of a family will hold together to have a big dinner on that night. It means the old year has already past and after people make a conclusion for the year, they hope to have a new and different year next.
The Spring Festival is also called “GuoNian”. Why Chinese called it “GuoNian”? It can be tracked back to the ancient time. A legend goes say that there is a big monster who is called “Nian” and it has a very big mouth that could swallow lots of people. It will come out to find food at the end of winter, wherever they go many people and animals will be eaten by the monster. So every year people will come up with all kinds of ideas to conquer “Nian”.
One New Years Eve, an old man stay at the village and when the monster “Nian” came, he made a big voice like firecrackers, and it shocked the monster, then the old man stood before the “Nian” with a red cloth. At last the monster ran away. People begin to enjoy their peaceful life. Before the old man left, he had told people to put up red paper decorations on their windows and doors at each year’s end to scare away Nian in case it sneaked back again, because red is the color the beast feared the most.
Therefore, people will celebrate the monster gone and threaten it not to come with the firecrackers and red couplets on every New Years Eve. And the word “Guo” in Chinese has both the meaning of “pass-over” and “observe”.
However, most people today have long forgotten why they are doing all this, except that they feel the color and the sound add to the excitement of the celebration. People will also eating dumplings and watching the Spring Festival Gala which is a necessary party for Chinese. That night is full of happiness and warmness.
After the New Years Eve, people will welcome a new year, so at the first day they still set off firecrackers and eat dumplings. After that people will pay calls to relatives and friends or go to temple fairs. Giving children luck money during Spring festival is a special Chinese custom, which represents luck and wealth.
