On the 6th August 2009, a public warning in preparation of the imminent Typhoon Morakot was sent out to all residents and tourists residing in Taiwan. Reports suggested that Morakot packed centre winds of 137 km/h and gusts of 173 km/h, around 500 km from North Eastern coast of llan. The damage and loss of life was colossal leaving more than one and a half million people without one of the key elements in life, water.
ISECO (Israeli Economic and Cultural Office) in Taiwan were quick to use their initiative and offer their advice as the news unfolded. In a dialogue with Executive Yuan, the executive branch of government for the Republic of China, the idea of shipping water devices that may be useful in reaching the most endangered areas in a quick and resourceful way was suggested. This idea was welcomed and was passed on to the Interior Minister and Disaster Control Center to deal with. A variety of potential devices were put forward and a few products were selected. The products included two SOS Tank Systems to transport water to remote and disconnected areas and a couple hundred SulisPPD, a personal, user-friendly device to purify flood and murky water into drinking water. These products were made by WaterSheer, an Israeli company that specializes in water purification and transporting devices to disaster-hit areas.
Over a million people were displaced as Typhoon Morakot hit the eastern coast of China. Furthermore, around 500 people missing and leaving over 150 people confirmed dead in one of the worst storm to hit the island in over 50 years, thus amassing billions in fixing costs. However, the fact that preparations for the rescue were made in advance limited the potential catastrophe of water poisoning to a minimum and meant that people were able to get back to their lives in a quick and fairly normal manner.
The SulisPPD is a device that provides individuals with quality drinking water in a compact, light-weight, simple to operate and cost efficient way. It can treat anything from Organic contamination to Biological or Chemical contaminants and is designed to function in harsh environments. The shipment was completed and distributed within 48 hours by Whitewater Security within Taiwan.
