When the words ‘wisdom teeth’ are mentioned, the most common thought is about having them removed. Why is this? Wisdom teeth are also referred to as third molars. This set of molars will start to come through in late adolesence or early adulthood, if they develop at all. As humans have evolved, there is less room in the mouth for these teeth to come in normally, although there are people who are able to keep them.
Wisdom teeth are the third molars and they normally appear after adolescence. Most people have 4 of these teeth, but some have less and some have none at all. The number of wisdom teeth you have is based on genetics, so you may want to ask your parents how many they have and what were their symptoms. There are even rare cases of having more than 4 of these types of teeth.
When there is a wisdom tooth infection the tooth must also be extracted. A wisdom tooth causes infection when it is partially impacted. Impacted teeth are teeth that do not break the surface. If a the tooth only partially breaks the skin, the remaining skin flap can collect bacteria. The resulting infection can be quite serious if left untreated.
It is always advisable to remove a wisdom tooth if it is causing problems. Sometimes antibiotics are used to clear the infection but the cure is only temporary. Hence a permanent cure to it is an operation.
The conduct of the operation is a step by step process. Your surgeon will prepare you for the operation. Smokers are asked to avoid smoking as it may cause after effects. A consent form should be signed. The operation is under anesthesia so that the patient does not feel the pain. The surgeon cuts the jaws and takes out the wisdom teeth. The length of the operation will depend upon the strength of the teeth. Once the operation is over the anesthesia will take some time to wane off and once the person gains consciousness, he may leave. The nurse gives the person some instructions regarding the care of the teeth and gums which needs to be followed strictly.
Below are the most common reasons for removing wisdom teeth.
1. Tooth decay
Saliva, bacteria and food particles can collect around an impacted wisdom tooth, causing it, or the next tooth to decay. It is very difficult to remove such decay. Pain and infection will usually follow.
2. Gum infection
When a wisdom tooth is partially erupted, food and bacteria collect under the gum causing a local infection. This may result in bad breath, pain, swelling and the inability to open your mouth fully. The infection can spread to involve the cheek and neck. Once the initial episode occurs, each subsequent attack becomes more frequent and more severe.
3. Pressure pain
Pain may also come from the pressure of the erupting wisdom tooth against other teeth. In some cases this pressure may cause the erosion of these teeth.
4. Orthodontic reasons
Many younger patients have had prolonged orthodontic treatment to straighten teeth. Wisdom teeth may cause movement of teeth particularly the front teeth when they try to erupt. This will compromise the orthodontic result.
