…our choice fell on the Southeast Asian country to have only been a few years back the tourism has opened. So we flew from Frankfurt to Amsterdam, then on to Kuala Lumpur and then, finally, in Ho Chi Minh City to land. Ho Chi Minh City formerly called Saigon, and for many people it will probably always remain Saigon. Saigon is chaotic; it lies north of the Mekong Delta at the same river. On the river there are ships on which to eat, drink and dance or sing karaoke. On the first evening we visited, so a ship and as we were the only guests, we also found the courage to sing. Asians are usually very polite people and even when my mother then “Bridge over Troubled Water” as wrong and dreadful was the best, they donated polite applause. Nearly all Vietnamese were to learn English and rejoiced when they found someone in which they were able to test their knowledge. The next day we had with the rickshaw through the city. We visited the An Quang Pagoda, Notre Dame and a by Gustave Eiffel designed post office. We strolled through the streets, visited the markets and let the hustle and bustle on us. Saigon is very western influenced and it is a good starting point for interesting excursions. We have a day trip into the Mekong Delta which was really very impressive. The people here live by the water and on the water.

You drive round with their small boats out to fish and drive them from the commercial boats. The landscape is breathtakingly beautiful. The delta is far and branches and even as far as the eye looks, one sees only the green of the fields and the dark brown of the water. Another very interesting excursion took us to the temple of the Cao Dais. This is a religious community among other things, Isaac Newton and Victor Hugo revered and a beautiful colorful temple near Saigon has built, you can visit and where you can also attend a worship service can take part, which in any case is worth seeing, even if you obviously do not understand a single word. Near the temple, you can also visit the underground passages, the Vietcong did. During the Vietnam War, many people lived under the earth around the bombing of the Americans to escape. Some of these caves can be committed and it is really amazing what kind of infrastructure the people of the earth have built, and how close it was in these caves. This is definitely not for the claustrophobic.

Our journey then took us further into the north. About Dalat city in the mountains, in the past because of the mild climate as a weekend home for the rich served Saigon, we arrived after Danang, the city on the clouds pass. Above the clouds pass you get to North Vietnam and once one has crossed the pass, you feel as though in a different country. A bit of it reminded me of my trip to the GDR, was before the Wall came down, I had the feeling as I travel from one color into a black and white film. The north is very different than the south. That may sound paradoxical, but just as it came to me before. North of the clouds pass, the preponderance of gray and with the climate changing as a people. But here are also found with the most beautiful sights of Vietnam: the old imperial city of Hue is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hanoi has a beautiful well-preserved old town and the Halong Bay with its bizarre rock formations surely belongs to the most beautiful landscapes in the world. Vietnam is a country full of contrasts. Here, worlds collide, but that is why Vietnam is in any case worth a visit.
