Is it worth the money to get a CB radio for my pickup truck?

I live in the mountains of north carolina. Cell phones aren’t that great over here and they are especially dead a lot during the winter and if i’m out in the woods. We also have I-26 and I-40 running through. I am debating between upgrading my sound system or getting a cb set up.I drive a regular cab chevy colorado. I plan on mounting the cb to the “hump” in the middle of the cab and mount the antenna to the bed liner. The package I am looking at has a cobra 29 ltd bt, 4′ firestik antenna, antenna cables, mounting hardware, and a 12V power adapter for about 200 dollars. When i priced all of these items by themselves on different websites and stores they all add up to around 250-260. Since they are quality items, I am hoping this is a long term investment.

Whether or not it’d be useful in an emergency, depends on how many other CB users are in your area & whether or not your local police typically monitor a CB in their patrol cars. Some police departments don’t even equip their cars with a CB nowadays….other police may have it but rarely monitor it. Check with your local law enforcement. If no law enforcement agency or volunteer group monitors the CB for emergency calls, you’ll have to rely upon the good will of another motorist with a CB, to hear your call & stop to assist you. In this day & age, not everybody is willing to do that.

The vast majority of CB users nowadays are commercial truck drivers. In some areas there will also be an unusually high percentage of people who run CB’s in ther personal vehicles (and I’d wager rural/ mountain NC is one of those areas, if it’s anything like any other rural southern state I’ve been in!) By & large I’ve seen more truck drivers willing to stop and help a motorist out- my husband almost always does; I did it a few times and lots of times I called 911 to report wrecks & stranded motorists, etc….but it is still far less common today than it used to be. A lot of truckers today don’t care, don’t want the risk/hassle/liability, or don’t listen to their CB’s either. If nothing else, most other motorists that you’ll reach over the CB are more than happy to call 911 for you & notify them of your location as soon as they get back into cell-phone service.

The only thing I’d do differently with your planned setup, is get a magnet-mount antenna and put it on the roof. Highest & most ‘central’ point of the vehicle will allow your transmission to get out further & will give you the best reception. But it can be done any number of ways & still work.

Maybe it’s been way too long since I’ve actually bought a brand-new CB (my first one was given to me by another truck driver when I got my CDL & subsequent “upgrades” were purchased from other truckers selling their radios in truckstops LOL) but I can’t believe it’s $200 for that whole setup. But I guess that’s about right, and probably why I never bought a new radio Buying a used radio CAN be a crap-shoot BUT I’ve never had a problem with any that I’ve bought- and a Cobra 29 goes for about $50-75 used….they’re a dime a dozen if you hang around any truck stop long enough & listen to truckers trying to sell their crap over the CB. Depends on how much you know about radios & whether there are any CB repair shops near you….but a used radio can be a whole lot cheaper to set up, if you want to take a slight risk.
