Are there certain codes I need to follow to run electricity to a shed that I’m building?
I plan on building a shed about 20 yards from my house and I would like to run electricity out there. What should I do to get started?
First of all you have to decide what you are going to do with the electricity and how much do you need. If your requirements are for 220 volts or multiple circuits you will need at least 100′ of #8 conductor for underground use and it will have to be buried a minimum of 24 inches deep. You will have to get various utility and phone company involved to check the area you plan to dig so you won’t kill yourself or cut into any existing power lines, telephone lines, gas lines water or sewage lines. You will have to apply for a permit to do the work and it should be inspected by the city or county to be sure you’ve met all the codes. You may have to run the feeder lines through conduit. You may have to install grounding rods if required by local code. You will have to install the residential wiring in the shed and have a circuit box installed to tap into. The fact that you are asking these questions seems like you are not that familiar or don’t realize the potential problems you may be faced with. Best bet is to get bids from licensed electricians and get them to do part or all of the job.
